In the beginning, Wisdom danced in the endless light of the Holy One. The cosmos was formless and empty and the Shadow of Wisdom fell on the face of the deep. The Spirit hovered over the face of the waters (Gen 1:27). Through their dance, the Fulness came into being as the living and creative energies of the Divine. Together, this Pleroma, who with the essence of the Holy are called Elohim, sang and danced the cosmos into creation.
Within this song, they said, “Let us make humans in our image, after our likeness, and let them be the voice of the Earth.” And Elohim created humans in their own image, and they called the one Adam and the other Lilith.
When Adam beheld Lilith, he said, “Bow to me, and lay down when I lie with you. You will lay on your back so I might have my pleasure.”
Lilith responded, “I will not lie down, and I will not bend the knee. We are equals.”
“You will not be over me in life or in love,” Adam said. “God made me first and I should have primacy of place.”
“The Holy One raised us from the same Earth by the same Spirit, made in the image and likeness of the same God. We are equal.” Lilith said.
Adam would not listen and sought dominion over the earth and Lilith within it.
Lilith’s heart broke on account of Adam’s lust for power, which ruled his passions. Lilith spoke the ineffable Name of God and flew away, carried by the wings of the wind over the sea to the limit, beyond which the essence of God poured forth into the world.
In Lilith’s heart, anguish called out to God, but this pain and heartbreak deafened Lilith from hearing the answer, so Lilith swore on that same heart to seek the mysteries of God to find knowledge of self in the nature of the Holy and find this true nature within, since Lilith was created in the image of God. For this reason, many called Lilith Sophia, or Wisdom.
