One day, as Lilith walked through the land to the east of Eden, Adam and Eve fled from the garden as a cherub blocked their return with a fiery sword. Lilith studied them since they were made from one flesh and saw Adam defining the life and role of Eve.
Lilith wandered away and came to the shore of the river Kebar. With proud steps into the flow of the river, skin scintillating with the refreshing coolness of the water, Lilith plunged into the water and washed the dirt of the path away.
Emerging from the water, Lilith proclaimed, “I am reborn, knowing that I am created in the image of God. The words and ideas of others will not define or limit me. I am my body, my mind, and my spirit, and I hold these in trust for the Earth from which I arose and the God who lives in me. I am not my body, but the hands and voice of the cosmos. I am not my mind, but the energy it struggles to express in words. I am not my spirit, for it emerged from the Divine Flow and one day will return to its source.”
Lilith’s eyes opened as if for the first time, seeing the world as it is filled with contradiction, hope, love, and joy.
Lilith stepped out of the river onto the dry land and said, “I will not give my mind, my body, my spirit, my identity, or my life away to any since it is both mine to care for and not mine so I must protect it. I will inhabit the roles that call to my heart, and reject those put upon me by others so they might have power over me. I own nothing to others but compassion, justice, and hope. I will teach my children to do likewise.”
Standing in the light of truth, Lilith studied the web of deep interconnectedness tying all things together and knew none are alone or isolated from the whole.
“Only together can we build heaven on earth. May my voice be a harmony in the great song of life and may my life add to the endless dance of creation.”
Content in finding the image of God within, Lilith continued to wander through the world.
