One day, Lilith happened upon Adam’s son Cain standing over the murdered body of his brother Abel. Cain stood proud of what he had done, while the spirit of Abel looked on in disbelief.
Lilith called out to the spirit of Abel, saying, “Son of Adam, your life has ended way too soon by the hand of your brother. Come to me, and be my child, and I will be your mother.”
The spirit of Abel turned to her and said, “I know who you are. You are Lilith, made at the same time as my father. As the Holy One formed him from the red clay of the Earth, they made you from the fertile black soil.” He ran into her arms and embraced her, “I was punished and my body was broken for being myself at the altar of God, drawing down the wrath of my brother against me.”
“Come with me, blessed child, and I will give you a new name and together, we can work to end the suffering of others.”
And Abel joined Lilith, and she named him Azrael, which means, “Help from God.”
Lilith and Azrael traveled the world calling the persecuted, the exiles, the rejected, and the unwanted, offering them grace, community, and hope.
